Rules & Disclaimer

The rules and/or regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. These rules shall govern the condition of all events, and by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to have complied with these rules. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATION OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participate, spectator or official.

The race director shall be empowered to permit minor deviation from any of the specifications herein or impose any further restrictions. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH ALTERATION OF SPECIFICATIONS. Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials. Their decision is final.

The Management of Mason Dixon Dragway

GENERAL RULES STATEMENT – ALL CARS Below are listed the general rules if any questions the current NHRA rulebook prevails.

  • Mason Dixon Dragway is a NHRA Member Track and will operate by NHRA requirements and specifications.
  • Your best source for the detailed safety, general guidelines and bracket racing requirements is the current NHRA Rule Book.
  • All drivers are required to have a valid GOVERNMENT / STATE drivers license (NO PERMITS).
  • Drivers 17 years old and younger must have a Minor Release and Waiver of Liability Form signed by both legal guardians (forms are available at the track).
  • Drivers and crew members must sign release waiver before entering restricted areas.
  • As a general rule unless optional equipment or a modification is specifically permitted by this Rulebook, it is PROHIBITED.
  • Proper clothing must be worn in restricted areas at all times. (Drivers must wear long pants, sleeved shirts & toed shoes to race) (Crews must wear sleeved shirts & toed shoes).
  • All race cars must have seat belts, seats bolted to the floor or frame and wear a helmet.
  • DO NOT REMOVE SEAT BELTS OR HELMET WHILE ON TRACK wait until you are on the return road. Drivers seat must be constructed, braced, mounted, and upholstered so that it will give full back and shoulder support. All seats must be upholstered, or as noted under Class or SFI Requirements. Properly braced, framed and supported, and constructed seats of aluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber, or double layer poly permitted.
  • Catch-can mandatory for coolant overflow; one pint (16 oz.) minimum capacity.
  • All batteries must be securely mounted. Relocated battery(s) must be fastened to frame or frame structure with a minimum of two 3/8-inch diameter bolts.
  • Batteries may not be relocated into the driver or passenger compartments.
  • Battery and fuel systems must be isolated from drivers compartment by metal bulkheads. This includes complete flooring. All holes must be plugged.
  • Firewall – all openings must be sealed with metal. Minimum .032-inch aluminum or .024-inch steel.
  • Master cutoff mandatory when battery is relocated, or as outlined in Class Requirements.
  • Driver compartment interior panels within the driver compartment of enclosed-cockpit cars where the driver is located behind the engine must be constructed of materials other than magnesium.
  • Each car in competition must have a positive-action on/off switch, capable of de-energizing the entire ignition system, in good working order, located within easy reach of driver.
  • All cars must be self-starting and self-stage. Rollers and/or push starts prohibited.
  • All fuel tanks, lines, pumps, valves, etc. must be outside of the drivers compartment and within the confines of the frame and/or steel body.
  • All fuel tank filler necks located inside trunk must have filler neck vented to outside of body. Fuel blocks/regulators must be 6“ forward of flywheel/bellhousing.
  • A positive-locking screw on fuel tank cap is mandatory on all open-bodied cars.
  • All carburetors must be covered by hood, flash shield or scoop. Hood scoop may not extend more than 11 inches above original hood surface.
  • All non-OEM fuel lines (including gauge and/or data recorder) must be metallic, steel-braided or NHRA accepted woven pushlock.
  • A maximum of 12 inches total (from front to rear) of non-metallic or non-steel braided hose is permitted for connection purposes only.
  • Nitrous Oxide if mounted in drivers compartment must be equipped with relief valve and vented outside of compartment. Nitrous Oxide is now permitted on all supercharged and turbocharged cars regardless of cubic inch displacement.
  • All bottles must be securely mounted, stamped with 1800 pound DOT rating identified as nitrous oxide.
  • No loose or liquid ballast allowed. All ballast must be installed with at least two 3/8″ dia. steel bolts.
  • Windshields and /or windows must be clear, without tinting or coloring, except factory-tinted safety glass.
  • Exhaust must be directed out of car to rear, away from driver and fuel tank. The use of flexpipe is prohibited.
  • All non-OEM automatic floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter must be equipped with a spring loaded positive reverse lockout devise to prevent shifter from accidentally being put into reverse gear.
  • Functional neutral safety switch mandatory.
  • Ground clearance minimum of 3� from front of car to 12-inches behind centerline of front axle, 2� for remainder of car.
  • All wheel studs must project into the hex portion of the lug nut by a distance equal to one diameter of the stud.

Motorcycles above 120 mph new either one piece leathers or two piece with 360 degee metal zipper joining both pieces

NO ONE WITHOUT A VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE IS PERMITTED TO OPERATE A MOTORIZED VEHICLE WITHIN THE RACING FACILITY(pits, staging lanes, return roads, etc.).When Jr. Dragster contestants are called to the staging lanes, they must come to staging lanes, and be prepared to stage.NO additional runs will be permitted if drivers arrive late, or miss the call to the staging lanes.Only 2 people in addition to the driver will be allowed to enter the restricted area.Only 1 person in addition to the driver will be allowed to enter onto the starting line.A car cannot be held in place during the burn out.All pre-race preparations by both driver and crew must be concluded before the car crosses the ready line. (Ready line is the area between the water box and the “V” located between the two lanes).No parent or crew member may touch or perform any function on the vehicle past this point. During time trials or eliminations.  If something needs to be adjusted or changed, notify the starter or starting line crew for assistance.The parent or crew may not help the driver pre-stage or stage. If the driver over stages the starter or starting line crew will assist the driver.It is considered a disqualification if any portion of a tire completely crosses the center line of the track.In the case where both opponents cross the center line, both drivers will be disqualified .Intentional crossing of boundary lines to avoid an accident, leave track or avoid depositing debris on track is not grounds for disqualification.Contact with the guardwall, barriers, track fixtures, and timing equipment is grounds for disqualification.Cars will be ladder off of their best reaction time for first round parings of eliminations.After each run the drivers will exit the track at the first left turn-in and proceed back to the pits through the north pit gate located at the far south end of the lower pits.

POINTS SERIES: Points Stay With The Class That You Run Each Event. You may transfer class within the first three events, points will transfer.  After the first three events you may changes classes but points will not transfer.

TRACK RULES:

  • Do not come to staging lanes until your class is called.
  • Once a class starts to run, staging lanes are closed to that class.
  • Mason Dixon Dragway does not guarantee the number of runs you will receive in a given day.
  • We will attempt to give you two runs as weather, entries & track condition will allow.
  • Please keep the speed of all vehicles in the pits at 10 MPH or slower.
  • Please contact track management before driving stakes into the ground. Driving stakes into the asphalt is prohibited. UNDERGROUND UTILITIES ARE EVERYWHERE.

RAINOUT POLICY RACER: NO CASH REFUNDSIf rain or other occurrence halts racing before the completion of first round eliminations, racers will receive raincheck credit as per tech card stub.  It is serial numbered and recorded for the date issued.If rain or other occurrence halts racing after the completion of first round those drivers still in competition will have raincheck.If rain or other occurrence halts racing at a point when your class has reached the money rounds, prize money will be disbursed equally to remaining racers and the race will be called complete, no rainchecks.Purse money is always paid the day of the event, driver must pick-up check before leaving.At any time during eliminations if rain or other occurrence halts racing, racers will receive points earned up to that point regardless of round number, but only on the completion of each class round.RAINOUT POLICY SPECTATOR/CREW: NO CASH REFUNDSIf rain or other occurrence halts races prior to the completion of first round eliminations your ticket becomes your raincheck. Your Spectator Pass is serial numbered and recorded for the event issued.  If rain or other occurrence halts races after the first round eliminations begin, the race will be considered complete. NO REFUNDS.IN THE EVENT THAT A RAINDATE IS PUBLISHED, THE RAINCHECK WILL BE GOOD FOR THAT DATE ONLY.

TIMING-GENERAL:  Reaction Times/Interval Times: These readings are provided only as an extra to basic timing information and are not guaranteed.Please do not ask for re-runs due to missed or disputed times.Dial-Ins: Dial-ins are displayed on pre-dial-in scoreboards prior to each race. It is the responsibility of each driver to check his/her dial-in for accuracy.If a racer stages and races – It is assumed that the racer accepts the dial-in as displayed and he/she is not entitled to re-runs as a result of incorrect times.

QUALIFYING: In order to constitute an official qualifying attempt, all cars must self start and self stage.NO backing up after leaving water box. Super Pro may not cross the starting line under power on burnout. Pro, Sportsman, Trophy, JD, Motorcycle may not cross the starting line on any burnout.COMPETITION RUNS: Once a car reaches the front of the staging lanes for a run, must be prepared to fire and race. If car cannot cross Staging Lanes Line under own power next car will complete the pair to run (prior to ladder sheet rounds)

AUXILIARY PIT VEHICLES: All contestants using auxiliary pit vehicles (mini-bikes, ATVs golf carts, etc.) must have a current pit sticker displayed on their vehicles. All auxiliary pit vehicles must be used for necessary transportation only. NO recreational or fun riding is allowed.

Restricted Areas

DEFINITION OF RESTRICTED AREA:

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL DRIVERS AND CREW MEMBERS READ AND UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING RULES AND REGULATIONS.

To fully understand these rules, the term RESTRICTED AREA must be defined.

At all NHRA events, the RESTRICTED AREAS ARE:

The area past the head of staging lanes Front of staging lanes – is the location directly in front of the Hot Pits & Staging lanes lineThe burnout and adjacent areas.The drag strip and shutoff areaThe return road to point of entry into pits.Trackside areas between the guard walls and primary spectator fences. 

AGE LIMITATIONS:All drivers and crew members must sign the appropriate Waiver and Liability Releases. Minors, under the age of 18, must have a Minor Release Form signed by BOTH PARENTS OR LEGAL GUARDIANS. In the case of a single parent (by means of divorce, death or court order), or a legal guardian (by court order), a written notation must be made on the minor release form.

To enter into any RESTRICTED AREA, any driver or crew member must possess and display a valid RESTRICTED AREA PASS. Minors under the age of 14 MUST REMAIN WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE TOW VEHICLE WHENEVER IN A RESTRICTED AREA.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK:The participant agrees that by entering an event, the participant acknowledges that the event site is safe and suitable for racing and the participant acknowledges that by participating in the event the participant may suffer bodily injury or death or loss or damage to property.

The participant further acknowledges that the participant has voluntarily assumed the risk of such losses and waives any claims for such losses against NHRA, the NHRA event officials, the event sponsors, the race track operators and other participants, discharges such persons from responsibility for such losses and covenants not to sue such persons for such losses. All participants shall be required as a condition of the participation to sign all required entry forms, including such releases as shall be required by NHRA insurance policies. For purposes of the Rulebook and Policy Manual, the term participant shall include any person directly or indirectly associated with any vehicle which has been permitted to enter an event site for the purpose of competition, including, but not limited to owners, drivers and crew members.

NHRA makes no representations or express or implied warranties in compliance with the rules and regulations published in the Rulebook and Policy Manual or published during the course of the year in National Dragster will prevent or guarantee against injury or death to spectators or participants or damage to personal property. These rules and regulations constitute the minimum acceptance standards for competition and are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport. Safety is the responsibility of the equipment manufactures, builders and the participants in the event.

REQUIREMENTS FOR NHRA LICENSE:

All application forms must be filled out completely:Application for NHRA LICENSEAll applications must be presented to TECH before license runs are made.All test runs will be single runs. No side-by-side runs on test sessions.All test runs must be witnessed by two licensed drivers and a track official.All Forms must be completely filled out before track official signs off.Original time slips must be attached to applications.(Suggested Driver make copies for his/her records) 

NHRA COMPETITION NUMBER:

An NHRA competition number is required to compete in the NHRA/Summit E.T. Racing Tournament Finals.  NHRA forms available at track or on-line. We recommend a NHRA competition number for all racers.
